Nasdaq has pulled the plug on what would have been its biggest and boldest cryptocurrency initiative before it even went live.&nbsp;



The US stock exchange giant’s CEO, Adena Friedman, said during a Wednesday earnings call that Nasdaq will halt plans for a crypto custodian business as it waits to see how the American regulatory landscape evolves.&nbsp;



Friedman said that it wasn’t the “right time” for Nasdaq to pursue a custodial business, citing a “lack of clarity” in the sector.&nbsp;



“We looked at the opportunity set of just being a custodian, nothing else, just that one segment of the business…[the] opportunity changed over the last several months and then the regulatory overlay and kind of overhang changed as well,” she said.



Nasdaq first made public its interest in becoming a <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/nasdaq-to-enter-crypto-custody-market-for-institutional-clients">crypto custodian last September</a>. In March, Blockworks reported that the stock exchange giant was eyeing a second-quarter launch of its <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/nasdaq-crypto-custody">crypto custody suite</a>.



Nasdaq declined to comment further when reached.



The move represents a pivot of sorts, but Nasdaq has indicated it will continue to push for the creation of crypto ETF products, including via its involvement in the growing crop of prospective <a href="https://blockworks.co/tag/bitcoin-etf">spot bitcoin ETFs</a>, as well as crypto-centric index products.&nbsp;

There’s also the question of how <a href="https://blockworks.co/tag/nasdaq">Nasdaq</a> has gone about building its custody business to date. Regulatory issues aside, the exchange appears to have been banking, at least in part, on brand-name recognition in the hopes of drawing crypto custodial customers from its existing base of clients and counterparties.&nbsp;



That approach, however, pitted Nasdaq against crypto-native custodial businesses such as Anchorage Digital, which possessed both first-mover advantages and homegrown tech stacks.&nbsp;



In conversations with industry participants, Nasdaq’s strategy was widely viewed as laying the groundwork for it to eventually offer a range of services to institutional crypto asset managers, including trading and execution, which would have created more regulatory complexities.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bridging crypto and finance</h2>



For Nasdaq to pull the plug —&nbsp;at least for now —&nbsp;on an ambitious custodial endeavor is a notable move, given the time and resources spent thus far.&nbsp;



An executive who interviewed with Nasdaq for a role in its crypto custody business told Blockworks earlier this year that the company’s tech stack — as well as its broader hiring pipeline — skewed toward those with traditional finance experience.&nbsp;



The executive, who requested anonymity to discuss a confidential hiring process, pointed to Nasdaq installing Ira Auerbach as president of Nasdaq Digital, its crypto unit, as the main individual on the team that “actually has crypto experience.” Auerbach formerly worked as Gemini’s global head of prime brokerage.&nbsp;



Auerbach in September 2022 <a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/delving-into-nasdaq-digital-assets-with-ira-auerbach">wrote</a> that “institutional adoption will accelerate once there are clear rules and regulations for the wide range of activities in the digital asset market.”



“On the product side, I see three major gaps: the security vs. access trade-off between cold and hot wallet key management, the lack of capital efficiencies given the many execution venues for digital assets and the lack of normalized best execution,” he said.



Auerbach, who has also spent time at Palantir, joined Nasdaq in July 2022 to oversee the custodial effort. At the time, Auerbach’s hiring was trumpeted by Nasdaq as one indication that the company would mesh crypto-native approaches with its legacy finance products.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Never say never?</h2>



In her remarks, Friedman stressed the company’s commitment to building crypto products and told analysts on the call that she wanted to avoid the word “forever.”



“We remain committed to supporting the evolution of the digital assets ecosystem in a variety of ways among them, to our ongoing engagement with regulators to delivery of comprehensive technology solutions across the trade lifecycle, and through our partnerships with potential ETF issuers to support tradable exchange with the products,” Friedman said.&nbsp;



Friedman cited the exchange’s partnerships with potential spot bitcoin ETF issuers as part of its ongoing focus in the digital asset space. For example, Nasdaq is BlackRock’s listing exchange for its <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/blackrock-files-bitcoin-etf">proposed spot bitcoin ETF</a>, which the asset manager announced in June.&nbsp;



As for what’s next, Friedman said Nasdaq would “likely” add to the digital assets business “in connection with other things you might want to try to do in the digital asset space.” So, for now, Nasdaq plans to settle as a “great technology provider” for its clients.



Yet by Nasdaq’s own telling, moves by US regulators have left long-established crypto companies on the defensive and stifled would-be startups throughout the sector. The SEC has open lawsuits against a number of crypto companies currently, including <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/sec-sues-coinbase">Coinbase</a> and <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/sec-allegations-against-binance">Binance</a>.



Industry participants have said regulatory uncertainty has made it increasingly difficult for companies to launch custodian services for digital assets.

Nasdaq says it’s not the ‘right time’ to launch crypto custody business

Cryptocurrency custodian Prime Trust is experiencing a significant deficit and won’t be able to fulfill all customer withdrawal requests, according to a cabinet-level Nevada state agency.



This notice was made available on the regulatory body&#8217;s website shortly after <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/bitgo-wont-buy-prime-trust">BitGo stated its decision to cancel</a> the prospective acquisition of Prime Trust.



Prime Trust has been incapable of fulfilling withdrawal requests since about June 21 “due to a shortfall of customer funds,” the regulator said in its cease-and-desist <a href="https://fid.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/fidnvgov/content/Opinion/Prime%20Trust%20-%20C%20and%20D%206.21.23.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">order</a> published Thursday. 



The crypto custodian was ordered to cease all activities as it has “considerably deteriorated to a critically deficient level” and is now in an “unsafe or unsound condition to transact business,” the state said.



Prime Trust has “materially and willfully breached its fiduciary duties to its clients,” it added.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Desperate efforts for emergency funding&nbsp;</h2>



Nevada’s Financial Institutions Division found that Prime Trust had a negative stockholders&#8217; equity of $12 million as of March 2023, which means the company owed more money than it had.



Blockworks <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/prime-trust-said-to-be-scrambling-for-emergency-cash-package">reported</a> earlier this month that Prime Trust had been scrambling to raise millions of dollars through emergency fundraising. It had been in talks with a bunch of potential financiers, with some executives considering a $25 million investment would stabilize the balance sheet.



Subsequently, BitGo <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/bitgo-bails-out-prime-trust">struck a preliminary deal</a> to acquire the company for an undisclosed amount. But the deal was scrapped on Thursday.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Prime Trust given 30-day window to request hearing</h2>



Many companies including digital asset firm <a href="https://hayvnglobal.com/market-commentary/prime-trust-update" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hayvn</a> and fiat on-ramp service <a href="https://support.stably.io/en/articles/8039846-prime-trust-halting-deposit-withdrawal?_ga=2.224471130.1963557396.1687454592-813931187.1687454592&amp;_gl=1*1iirsmx*_ga*ODEzOTMxMTg3LjE2ODc0NTQ1OTI.*_ga_R2T8PD7439*MTY4NzQ1NDU5Mi4xLjEuMTY4NzQ1NDcxMS41My4wLjA." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stably</a> announced that Prime Trust had halted deposits after being ordered to do so by the Nevada regulator.



“Please take action immediately to stop sending client custody assets to Prime Trust, especially digital assets,” Stably said.



Prime Trust didn’t immediately return Blockworks’ request for comment.



Prime Trust can choose to ask for a hearing within 30 days. If it doesn’t, the order will become final.

Nevada regulator says Prime Trust can’t meet withdrawal requests

As the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve, there is an increasing need for a regulatory framework specifically designed for custodians.&nbsp;



There are very few jurisdictions that mandate that digital assets should be segregated from financial intermediaries via independent custodians, and this must be addressed.&nbsp;



Regulators in key jurisdictions need to outline clear rules and guidelines as to how crypto firms should operate —&nbsp;a framework focused on custodians could have solved many of the issues seen in the last few years.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why the exchange model for asset segregation is fundamentally flawed</h2>



Merely promising to separate client assets on a centralized exchange is not a model that works for the industry; it simply does not bring the transparency required. Crypto exchanges often behave as banks, operating on a fractional reserve model — but crucially, they’re not regulated as banks.&nbsp;



We’ve witnessed many exchange platforms cease operations in 2022, leaving customers with no deposit protection — and we’re still observing this trend in 2023.&nbsp;



When a crypto exchange is used to buy or trade cryptocurrencies, the investor entrusts the exchange to hold those digital assets on their behalf, and therefore bears the risk of their assets being used for purposes which they’re unaware of — as evidenced by the collapse of FTX. In the event of the exchange&#8217;s bankruptcy or insolvency, those assets may be at risk.



To mitigate this risk, an investor can separate their digital assets from the exchange (and from any potential commingling with other users’ assets) by using a custodian: a third-party service that specializes in holding and safeguarding digital assets.



If the exchange were to go bankrupt, the investor’s assets held with the custodian would not be affected, as they are not part of the exchange&#8217;s assets and so can be retrieved directly from the custodian at any time. This effectively removes customer assets from the reach of general creditors of the bankrupt firm.&nbsp;



Unlike exchanges, custodians prioritize the safekeeping and <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/crypto-custodians-must-separate-customer-corporate-assets-ny-regulator" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">segregation</a> of digital assets belonging to individuals or institutions above all else.&nbsp;



This specialized nature of custodians reduces the likelihood of custodians becoming bad actors, ensuring a secure environment for investors.



Should a custodian face insolvency, the situation is quite different from that of a failing exchange. As custodians maintain strict asset segregation in compliance with regulatory requirements, the investor’s assets are protected even in the event of the custodian’s bankruptcy.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Having any old regulatory framework vs. having a ‘good’ regulatory framework</h2>



The regulatory dialogue that has been playing out since the collapse of FTX shows that simply having a regulatory framework is not enough.



Instead, regulators should focus on building a &#8220;good&#8221; regulatory framework; one that provides clarity and protection for investors while setting clear expectations for service providers.



Custodians have an intense focus on compliance, risk management, regulation, governance, security and client servicing. These are the fundamental pillars that clients expect, and the principles that have been well-tested across traditional finance.&nbsp;



Teams of risk management and security specialists analyze and assess both internal and external risks to ensure that customer assets are protected. Robust processes and contingency measures are maintained to safeguard clients&#8217; digital assets against external risks, natural disasters, power outages, or other force majeure incidents. In the unlikely event of theft or loss, these processes are supported by an insurance safety net.



If investors feel protected and if service providers know what is expected of them, more institutions will enter the space.



It’s to this end that <a href="https://blockworks.co/tag/custodian">custodians</a> are calling for regulators to mandate that independent, fully licensed custodians are used for the safekeeping of digital assets.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Setting the gold standard</h2>



Investors, including exchanges, now more than ever, need fit and proper due diligence to assess counterparty risk and manage perceived risk by using qualified custodians to segregate and protect their digital assets. The collapse of FTX and its repercussions has highlighted the pivotal role of independent, external, licensed custodians in legally and technologically segregating clients&#8217; assets from the financial intermediary.



2023 could be the year for the progression of crypto <a href="https://blockworks.co/tag/regulation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">regulation</a>.



Custodians are steadfast in their strategic objectives at this critical juncture — to remain focused on compliance, governance, risk management, security and regulation, the fundamental pillars necessary for the future health of the industry.



For governments to successfully regulate the crypto industry and effectively protect investors, their efforts must be directed toward establishing rules that enable custodians to operate transparently and legally. Focusing on punitive measures, excessive anti-money laundering and know-your-customer user requirements or DeFi regulation will not yield the desired outcomes for the industry.&nbsp;



When we shift the spotlight toward the proper regulation of custodians, governments can create a more secure and reliable ecosystem.&nbsp;

Rules in Crypto Are a Good Thing, We Promise

As bankruptcies continue plaguing the crypto segment, New York’s Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) is urging crypto custodians to separate corporate and customer assets, among other measures.



New <a href="https://www.dfs.ny.gov/industry_guidance/industry_letters/il20230123_guidance_custodial_structures" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">guidance</a> from NYDFS Superintendent Adrienne Harris published Monday states that custodians of digital assets should “separately account for, and segregate” a customer’s assets from those owned by the company — both on-chain and on the custodian’s internal ledger accounts.  



The latest guidance also expects that crypto custodians should only receive customer assets “for the limited purpose of carrying out custody and safekeeping services, and that it will not thereby establish a debtor-creditor relationship with the customer.”&nbsp;



The suggestions are meant to better protect customers in the event of an insolvency, or a similar proceeding, the regulator said.&nbsp;



FTX, which filed for bankruptcy in November, allegedly co-mingled funds with affiliated trading firm Alameda Research. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried earlier this month <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/sam-bankman-fried-issues-not-guilty-plea">pleaded not guilty</a> to charges that include wire fraud, money laundering and violating campaign finance laws.&nbsp;



New York’s virtual currency regulation already requires entities to protect customer assets, maintain comprehensive books and records, properly disclose custody service terms and refrain from misleading customers.



“DFS’s virtual currency regulation has protected New Yorkers since 2015,” Harris said in a statement. “Today’s guidance reminds DFS-regulated virtual currency companies of our expectations regarding the safekeeping of customer assets.”&nbsp;



The New York regulator last month <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/new-york-banks-now-need-approval-before-engaging-with-crypto-regulator-says">began requiring</a> state-regulated banks to apply for approval before engaging in digital-asset related activities.



More recently, the NYDFS earlier this month found Coinbase <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/coinbase-stock-up-after-settlement">violated anti-money laundering</a> laws in 2018 and 2019. The exchange agreed to pay a $50 million fine and $50 million more to go toward its compliance practices.



A day later, New York Attorney General Letitia James <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/celsius-founder-defrauded-thousands-nyag">filed a civil lawsuit</a> alleging that ex-Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky made false and misleading statements about the company’s safety to encourage investors to deposit digital assets onto the platform.&nbsp;



Celsius initiated <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/celsius-to-file-for-bankruptcy-imminently-report">bankruptcy proceedings</a> in July, about a month after it halted <a href="https://blockworks.co/celsius-lending-platform-suspends-withdrawals-and-transfers">withdrawals</a>, citing “extreme market conditions.”



BlockFi <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/blockfi-files-for-bankruptcy">filed for bankruptcy</a> just days after FTX’s collapse. Filings <a href="https://pacer-documents.s3.amazonaws.com/109/1094078/118164199368.pdf">revealed</a> that BlockFi has roughly 100,000 creditors with $1 billion to $10 billion in liabilities and assets.&nbsp;



Genesis became the latest crypto company to go the <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/genesis-in-chapter-11-wont-insulate-silbert-winklevoss-says">bankruptcy</a> route, doing so last week. The firm had <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/genesis-halts-lending">halted customer withdrawals</a> in November after the unraveling of FTX, where it had <a href="https://twitter.com/GenesisTrading/status/1590836594382032896" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$175 million</a> in locked assets.



Genesis was Gemini’s partner for its recently-terminated Earn program, which allowed rewards of up to 8% to customers who lent cryptoassets to Genesis. Gemini co-founder Cameron Winklevoss has said Genesis is owed $1.675 billion by parent company Digital Currency Group — a point DCG CEO Barry Silbert has denied.



Tyler Winklevoss <a href="https://forum.makerdao.com/t/gusd-makerdao-partnership-update/19428" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> last week that the NYDFS, which supervises Gemini, would be the trustee of Gemini’s bankruptcy estate in such a case. Assets in the Gemini stablecoin (GUSD) reserve are held in accounts separate from Gemini’s business and are not “property” of the company.

Crypto Custodians Must Separate Customer, Corporate Assets: NY Regulator

Hong Kong-based crypto custodian Hex Trust said it has raised tens of millions of dollars in fresh capital to scale its operations to the Middle East and Europe, according to a <a href="https://hextrust.com/resources-collection/hex-trust-raises-88-million-series-b-funding-scale-asias-leading-digital-asset-custodian" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statement</a> on Tuesday.



The Series B funding round, co-led by Animoca Brands and Liberty City Ventures, garnered $88 million in capital, which saw its valuation rise to $300 million.



It marks the company&#8217;s first significant raise and is consistent with growing interest from outside parties seeking to invest in platforms and technology used in the safekeeping of digital assets.



Participants in the round also included Ripple, Terra, Morgan Creek, Primavera Venture Partners, LeadBlock Partners, Eterna Capital, Sino Global Capital, Topaz and real estate giant New World Development&#8217;s CEO Adrian Cheng, among others.



Funding will also be used to obtain additional licenses and expand Hex Trust&#8217;s business services as well as continue the development of its &#8220;bank-grade&#8221; custody platform HexSafe.



Provider of licensed and insured bank-grade custody solutions for crypto, Hex Trust has continued to lure investment from venture capitalists and crypto firms looking to take a punt on the four-year-old company.



Last year, Hex Trust nabbed $6 million via Series A funding and a further $10 million in an extended round led by Animoca in a bid to further branch out across South-East Asia. The company also tapped the <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/custodian-hex-trust-launches-digital-assets-pilot-with-philippines-union-bank/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Union Bank of the Philippines</a> to assist in the expansion of its custody services in that country.



Hex Trust currently employs 100 people across offices based in Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam.



&#8220;It was a tremendous year of growth for Hex Trust and this funding round enables us to continue scaling,&#8221; said Hex Trust CEO Alessio Quaglini.

Digital asset custodians continue to attract large investors, oftentimes accompanying significant capital raises. In January, crypto custodian Fireblocks&nbsp;raised a staggering $550 million in a Series E round co-led by D1 Capital Partners and Spark Capital, which saw the company valued at $8 billion.

Childhood investment specialist EarlyBird has tapped digital asset platform <a href="https://www.gemini.com/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaignID=13567832040&amp;utm_adgroupID=126782346954&amp;utm_creativeID=547717427706&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_content=e&amp;utm_term=gemini&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA0KmPBhBqEiwAJqKK41gYRHSKzWVjGWPiwR_-QydPscMazebDyPHW0rMYU2F-XT1ECkKB1xoCwP8QAvD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gemini</a> to add crypto to its available asset classes.&nbsp;



EarlyBird — a registered investment advisor that until now focused on stocks and bonds — told Blockworks Tuesday that it’s launching its first crypto option. Gemini, an investor in EarlyBird, is set to provide custody for the digital assets.&nbsp;



The startup offers custodial accounts opened by a parent, relative or friend on behalf of a minor. The idea behind the accounts, which offer no tax advantages like a 529 plan for college savings, is to give children a jump-start on investing.&nbsp;



Additions to the <a href="https://www.getearlybird.io/crypto" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EarlyBird Crypto</a> waitlist will get early access to the offering later this year, the company announced.



“We want to ensure that all American families have access to the future of wealth creation,” EarlyBird Co-founder and CEO Jordan Wexler told Blockworks. “They will live in a world that is deeply ingrained in blockchain technology, Web3 and of course cryptocurrency, and we want to ensure that these kids have exposure to all of those digital assets as part of their core portfolio.”

Crypto investments for now will be limited to bitcoin and ether, but the company said that could change in the future — including when it comes to NFTs.



The crypto offering follows EarlyBird’s third round of funding in the fourth quarter last year, with venture capital firm Seven Seven Six leading the $4 million round. Gemini also participated.&nbsp;



Founded in December 2020, EarlyBird currently offers five investment portfolios.&nbsp;



Gemini backed EarlyBird via its <a href="https://www.gemini.com/frontier-fund" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Frontier Fund</a>, the company’s venture arm. Launched in the second quarter of 2021, the fund has about 30 portfolio companies, according to Marshall Beard, Gemini’s head of strategy and corporate development.



“When I think about investing through the fund, I think about how does this support Gemini?” Beard said. “Does this lead to a partnership, does this lead to an acquisition? Are they working on technology that we don’t have expertise in? Are they working on technology that we don’t have the bandwidth to do?”



Gemini has been focused on expanding its institutional business. The company <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/gemini-now-a-one-stop-shop-for-advisors-after-bitria-buy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced its buy</a> of digital asset portfolio management platform BITRIA earlier this month and <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/gemini-acquires-crypto-trading-tech-platform-omniex/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">revealed its purchase</a> of trading technology platform Omniex.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Gemini’s partnership with EarlyBird fills a gap for the company by offering crypto access to children, Beard explained.



“In the future, as we expand wealth management, as we expand investment management, as we expand family planning, we’re going to work with EarlyBird,” he said.



EarlyBird made several hires following the latest fundraise, COO and Co-founder Caleb Frankel told Blockworks, including Will Steiner, its head of content and literacy.



Users on the EarlyBird Crypto waitlist will receive a six-part course via email about crypto and blockchain technology. The idea, Frankel said, is to showcase to parents crypto’s potential as a long-term asset.



“What our customers were really asking for was the opportunity to be able to not just gift generalized crypto or a crypto ETF, but the ability to gift a specific asset to tell the story about the technology,” Frankel said.&nbsp;

Parents Can Invest in Crypto for Their Kids Via Startup

Longtime equities trader Glenn Barber made his move into crypto when he sensed innovation slowing in traditional finance.&nbsp;



Barber, then working for Deutsche Bank, told Blockworks that the feeling he was improving the fortunes of his institutional clients was dwindling.&nbsp;



“By around 2013, 2014, it just morphed into a situation where you might be excited about your product, you might be excited about your clients, but you&#8217;re not sure if any of it mattered anymore,” Barber said. “I was questioning how any of this was going to materialize in terms of personal satisfaction and intellectual stimulation — that was a crucial turning point for me.” 



Now head of sales for the Americas for crypto custodian Copper, Barber said he felt a “turning point” at the time that coincided with the rise of bitcoin. He started to read more about the asset class and became hooked.&nbsp;



Voyager Digital CEO and co-founder Stephen Ehrlich sensed an opportunity and pushed Barber to make the career move in 2018.



“He was building out the Voyager platform and was getting a lot of unsolicited inquiries from institutions,” Barber said. “He didn&#8217;t have anyone running its institutional business, so he asked me to come on board and be their chief institutional officer.”&nbsp;



The crypto shift stunned Barber’s colleagues in the banking world, most of whom did not understand digital assets. Turns out Barber had a lot to learn, as well.



“Being new to crypto at that point, I still had a lot to get my head around at that time,” he said. “I looked at it from my own perspective as almost like going back to school and getting a completely new education.”&nbsp;



Barber worked at Lehman Brothers until 2008 and then moved to Barclays before joining Deutsche.&nbsp;



“I think it&#8217;s widely known that up until 2008, financial institutions, particularly the investment banks, were really innovators in finance and responsible for generating new and interesting products,” Barber said.&nbsp;



It didn’t take Barber long to see the value of digital assets, feeling that the technology <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/former-us-sec-chairman-digital-assets-will-change-global-financial-infrastructure/">would one day change markets worldwide.&nbsp;</a>



“I was trying to be as forward-thinking as possible, I figured that I might have to grind it out for the next two or three years working for a startup, working in this entrepreneurial situation, this fledgling crypto industry,” Barber said. “But I was fairly sure that on a risk-reward basis, if I stuck it out, there was really going to be something at the end of this journey.”&nbsp;



Even now, Barber thinks the industry has a long way to go in terms of institutional infrastructure, but he’s optimistic.



“I think that infrastructure, in terms of custody, trading, clearing and settlement, trade analytics, and all the other great stuff that we need in crypto that mirrors the investment management lifecycle in traditional finance, is being built out,” Barber said. “We&#8217;re not quite there yet, but we are significantly ahead of where we were two or three years ago.”



Barber stayed at Voyager for eight months before moving to FalconX to head up sales efforts for about two years. He started at Copper in August 2021, where he focuses on institutional investors for the firm’s business development team.&nbsp;
